Skiing in Friuli

Winter activities for adults and children

The nature in Friuli Venezia Giulia is stunning: mountains are covered with forests where you can get lost in walks and trekking of different degrees of difficulty, lakes have transparent water where the surrounding mountains reflect themselves, the air is clean and crisp.

This is the perfect setting where you can practise many sport and activities both in Summer and in Winter.

In Winter the mountains are immersed in white and soft snow and in that magic setting you can choose among a wide range of things to do in the open air: you can go and discover the territory by yourself or be accompanied by nature guides in independent excursions or in tours organized by the local tourism boards.

What you can do almost everywhere is to go trekking or, if there is a lot of snow,go with snowshoes. There are plenty of trails signaled with signs on the trees or on the rocks (usually in red and white) that allow you to find your way to mountain refuges where you can see beautiful landscapes or enjoy delicious meals. Ask to the local tourism office for the guided excursions: for some Euros a guide will head you to special trails during the day or sometimes also at moonlight.

Obviously in Friuli Venezia Giulia you can also practice the typical snow sports. In Piancavallo, Monte Zoncolan and Tarvisio surroundings there are the main ski hubs where you can choose among Alpine skiing, cross country skiing or snowboarding.

Children are also taken in great consideration and special areas are dedicated to them with easy ski slopes and snow games. Other opportunities for children to enjoy their winter holiday in Friuli Venezia Giulia are the skating rings which sometimes are set up in the city centres of the mountain resorts. In case of bad weather you should also know that in the cities of Pontebba, Piancavallo and Claut there are ice skating rinks open to the public for skating and where sometimes hockey matches are helded.

A snow activity that enchants and leaves speechless both adults and children is sled dogging: there are some sled dogging schools near Fusine Lakes, near Slovenia border. Together with the local tourism board they schedule special daily activities for children at economic prices. Otherwise you can also contact the school directly and ask for a tailor made tour by sled with dogs and discover the landscape from an unusual point of view.

Another funny thing that children will surely love (but also adults to be honest) is the Alpine Coaster, a bobsled that runs on a rail. You’ll find it in Piancavallo, but if you have your own sled and you want to have some fun sliding down from snowy hills and mountains you can improvise a speedway almost everywhere!

And when the sun goes down and the stars are high in the sky go to a restaurant and taste the traditional Friuli Venezia Giulia cuisine: frico with polenta, gulasch, cjarsons and other delicious dishes that will give you the energy to face another day on the snow making sports and trekking!
